Professional Science Master's Program

Rutgers University is launching a new program to educate future leaders in industry, business, and government organizations. This program, at the Master’s degree level, responds to the urgent need of strengthening the vitality and competitiveness of the U.S. economy. If you considered enrolling in graduate studies to promote your career, you may be facing two traditional choices. “Shall I enroll in a Master or Ph.D. program in my science or engineering field? Or shall I get an MBA that will teach me a lot about business but nothing about what’s new in my technical field?” If you are like many professional workers, perhaps neither of these options seem perfect. As of next year, you won’t need to make this choice.

A Professional Science Master's (PSM) is an innovative graduate degree that typically consists of two years of academic training in an emerging or interdisciplinary area of science, mathematics, or technology. The PSM also contains a professional component that may include internships and "cross-training" in business, management, and communications. The new Professional Science Master's Program at Rutgers University will offer 2 educational opportunities: a degree, Master of Business and Science with a concentration in science or engineering; as well as a Certificate in Science & Technology Management.

The MBS degree is responding to the needs of modern industries and businesses that are looking for multidisciplinary workers with up-to-date knowledge in their fields who also understand the linkage between technology and business. Such workers know how to lead innovations from idea to commercialization, understand market and customer needs, know how to assess financial decisions, and demonstrate leadership and team-building skills. The degree includes 43 credits with up to 24 credits in the sciences and/or engineering and 19 credits in business. Each student is required to take at least one track in business and one track in science or engineering. A typical degree will include 6 courses in business and 8 courses in science. As part of the business track, students will take a capstone design course, where they will turn a scientific idea into an innovative team-based business plan for a new product, process, initiative or service.

The Certificate in Science and Technology Management is 19 business credits. It is recommended for PhD. students, post docs, and individuals with equivalent industry experience.
