PSM Program: Master of Business & Science (MBS)

We are proposing a new degree at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. This new degree, to be called, Master of Business & Science (abbreviation: MBS) is part of a nation-wide trend in professional science master’s programs. Today, more than 100 such programs exist across the US, almost all created in the last decade. The America Competes Act and a recent National Academy of Sciences report have both recommended that four-year research universities invest to significantly expand the number of professional science masters’ programs to create scientific professionals and leaders with the capabilities needed to succeed in the global economy. Today, U.S. businesses need workers who not only possess up-to-date knowledge in their fields, but also have multidisciplinary entrepreneurial skills that can translate scientific and technical knowledge into profitable products and services. Such professionals understand the linkage between technology and business, know how to lead innovations from idea to commercialization, are aware of market and customer needs, are familiar with financial decisions, and have developed leadership and team-building skills.

Traditionally, science master degrees have been perceived as preparatory to a research-oriented doctorate and were typically focused on extending a student’s undergraduate education in a single discipline. Expanding masters-level education beyond a single discipline is currently being pursued by dozens of universities, with about 120 programs nationally.

The new Rutgers program is based on integrating tracks in business with science, engineering, and other professional fields. A university-wide system based on a simple and modular framework allows the immediate participation of all schools by taking advantage of the breadth and depth of Rutgers faculty scholarship. By having a single MBS website and a central degree in the Graduate School of each campus to which individuals can apply, the program will overcome Rutgers’ internal complexity, offering students substantial choice and flexibility.
