The Certificate in Science & Technology Management is a certificate
open to all graduate and post-doctoral fellows the sciences or engineering, part-time industry students or individuals with equivalent industry experience.
The certificate program is designed to introduce students to the management of science and technology. To stay competitive, U.S. industries and businesses today need workers who not only possess up-to-date knowledge in their fields, but who have also acquired multidisciplinary entrepreneurial skills that enable them to translate scientific and technical knowledge into profitable products and services. Such workers understand the linkage between technology and business, know how to lead innovations from idea to commercialization, are aware of market and customer needs, are familiar with financial decisions, and have developed leadership and team-building skills. For example, it is commonly known that many science and engineering workers in industry are promoted to managerial positions within a few years. They are often not prepared for this change, nor did they receive any formal education in management. Furthermore, even non-managers are coping today with problems beyond their original disciplines, such as markets and customer connections, budgeting and finance, or team leadership.
The goals for the Certificate in Science & Technology Management include the following:
I. to understand the connection between technology and business and how technical work impacts
the business of organizations.
II. to understand the fundamental concepts of marketing, business strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship.
III. to understand the basic concepts of financial management and able to assess the financial aspects of a
new scientific venture or project and make recommendations for investments and payback.
IV. to learn the basics of management of science & technological projects and programs.
V. to acquire and develop leadership skills of inspiring, motivating, directing and coaching individuals and teams.
VI. to develop good oral and written communications skills
VII. to understand the core elements required to design and operate an effective, science-driven organization
and how to diagnose and solve organizational problems.
